Professional Athletic Trainer Megan Duncan explains what D.O.M.S is all about! We have all experienced it. Start up a new workout and then in the next day or two, the soreness sets in. This type of soreness that sets in 24 to 72 hours after a workout is known as delayed onset muscle soreness or D.O.M.S. Everything from breakdown to muscle fibers to excessive loads to the muscle(doing too much too soon) to excessive lactic acid build up have been researched as the cause of the pain and soreness but so far researchers have been unable to exactly pinpoint the cause. On the other hand, treatment for D.O.M.S. is much more straight forward. It might seem counter intuitive but the best thing to do once D.O.M.S. sets in is to continue to workout. The workout should be lighter and not as intensive and include some gentle stretching but this will help alleviate the soreness.
