Project Walk In Atlanta By Tony Davenport

Traditionally, spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation focused on compensation. The thought was that the human nervous system could not re-organize and improve function below the level of injury. Recent research and our own client success over the last decade have proven this to be false for many people with SCI. At Project Walk we cannot guarantee who will regain function, however, we understand and recognize symptoms that present the potential to improve function below the level of injury. We tap into this potential through an intense activity-based program. This program focuses on using specific exercises that are related to the same movement patterns that occur during human development. Through these movements we are attempting to re-establish patterned neural activity within the central nervous system. These movement patterns are replicated by our clients with the assistance of our highly trained SCI Recovery Specialists. Our Specialists have been taught to respond to the cues each client’s nervous system gives them and, by providing the proper stimulus, help it to re-organize. In addition to the unique exercises and highly trained staff, Project Walk also believes that the use of antispasmodics and other medication...

Tony Davenport is currently the lead trainer at Project Walk Atlanta; a pioneer in exercise-based recovery and has been treating SCI clients for over a decade. Did you know that 11,000 spinal cord injuries happen every year in our country?  Spinal cord injuries can happen to anyone at anytime, in many ways. These injuries can be life threatening and in many cases life altering. A spinal cord injury can turn a person’s life upside down in an instant. Imagine losing all your freedom and Independence in a matter of minutes. Imagine having to re-learn basic functions and activities of daily living. Spinal cord injuries are unique for each person and the level of injury and severity make rehabilitation and prognosis difficult. Medical science cannot repair nerve damage of the spinal cord. Surgeons can only piece back the vertebrae of the spine. Recovery is a painful waiting game. In very severe cases where there is extensive nerve damage there is little hope...

Professionals For Spinal Cord Injury By Tony DavenPort

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) trainer Tony Davenport is currently the lead trainer at Project Walk Atlanta.  At Project Walk Atlanta, their services and programs are very unique including the program for children with SCI. The objective of our program for children is twofold.  First, we educate the family on the long-term benefits of activity-based recovery. Second, we teach a family member or trainer to work with the child on a consistent recovery program. We empower the family to train at home or a local gym and provide long-term objectives, guidance and coaching. Return visits are a necessity as improvements and changes occur, but the majority of the work can be done at home. Children are growing and developing so the nervous system is still in the process of organizing. As a child with Spinal Cord Injury grows, the body will grow into and adapt to the wheelchair. Instead, why not provide the nervous system stimulation necessary for a chance beyond a wheelchair. Since we are working with children, the workout program must be fun but each workout is supported by developmental movement patterns that all...
